Our client are seeking an experienced and motivated Engineering Manager to lead the on-site engineering team and oversee daily operations.

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for achieving world-class machinery uptime and maintenance standards through the implementation of a robust maintenance strategy.

 

This role will play a critical part in ensuring engineering excellence, minimising downtime, and supporting continuous improvement across the site.

 


 

Key Responsibilities

 

Maintenance & Operational Excellence

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive preventative maintenance plan.

  • Ensure production equipment is maintained to a high standard to support operational performance.

  • Identify and resolve recurring engineering issues; implement long-term solutions.

  • Reduce downtime and improve machinery efficiency through proactive maintenance planning.

  • Maintain compliance with PUWER98 regulations and all relevant engineering standards.

 

Finance & Budget

  • Manage and control the engineering R&M budget.

  • Lead cost-reduction initiatives through strategic sourcing and supplier negotiations.

  • Oversee and execute capital expenditure projects in line with site CAPEX plans.

 

People Leadership

  • Manage and develop a skilled engineering team, fostering a culture of engagement, accountability, and continuous improvement.

  • Identify and address training needs to upskill the team and maintain high standards of work.

  • Ensure effective communication across shifts and functions.

 

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Champion a culture of health and safety, ensuring compliance with company and legal standards.

  • Conduct risk assessments and ensure safe systems of work are in place.

  • Drive and maintain engineering-related safety processes and documentation.

 

Production & Technical Support

  • Act as a key support contact for production operations, ensuring engineering support is timely and effective.

  • Provide engineering solutions to support New Product Development (NPD) and other business initiatives.

 

Site Maintenance & Facilities

  • Oversee building maintenance and groundskeeping to ensure a safe, clean, and functional site environment.

  • Manage contractor control and ensure all external work complies with safety and quality standards.

 


 

Key Metrics / KPIs

  • Machinery uptime and performance

  • Engineering team engagement and development

  • R&M budget adherence

  • Health & Safety compliance (accidents/incidents)

  • Project delivery (CAPEX and maintenance)

  • Engineering response times and issue resolution

 

Experience

  • Proven leadership in an engineering management role within a chilled FMCG or manufacturing environment.

  • Experience managing multi-shift engineering operations across a 7-day week.

  • Strong background in effluent plant and steam systems.

  • Experienced in managing external contractors and capital projects.

 

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in electrical or mechanical engineering.

  • IOSH Managing Safely (essential); NEBOSH (desirable).

  • 17th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations.

  • Health & Safety Level 2 qualification.

 

Technical Skills

  • Knowledge of 5S, Lean manufacturing principles, and continuous improvement.

  • Familiarity with PUWER 98 regulations.

  • Competent in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Budgeting and cost control experience.
